Viola Davis Scores Lead Role As The “Woman King”; Black Superheroes Taking Over

Before there was a Black Panther or Wonder Woman, there was a Woman King. Based on the Agojie, Dahomey’s Amazon warriors, Viola Davis stars as their fearless leader, Nanisca, and John Boyega as the nation’s leader, King Ghezo.

Directed and co-written by Gina Prince-Blythewood (Love & Basketball, The Old Guard) and set to Beyonce’s “My Power,” the trailer transports viewers to 18th-century Benin with lush greenery and breathtaking views.

As European forces threaten the peace, King Ghezo relies on Nanisca and her tribe of powerful women to defend their country.

In an era of superhero films and comic book adaptations, it’s refreshing to see more stories of real heroes, especially one with as much Black female excellence in front of and behind the camera, being put on the big screen.

On the topic of Black female excellence, Beyoncè premiered the music video for “Already” on the same day her visual album Black is King dropped on Disney Plus, featuring musicians Shatta Wale and Major Lazer.

The music video features Beyoncé in multiple spots at night, surrounded by nature.

She also uses the video to highlight the beauty of being Black and includes lots of celebratory dancing.
