Justine Skye, Chloe Bailey, and Ryan Destiny sat down with #ifnotformygirls panel at the 2022 Essence Festival. Justine Skye was candid when explaining how she has maintained her friendships throughout her music career.
During the #ifnotformygirls panel at the EssenceFest, R&B singer Justine Skye was asked how she maintained her long-term friendships. Skye explained how it hasn’t been easy, and how she’s still learning as time goes on. She said:
“Just being completely honest right now, I’m now in a space where I’m just like figuring out who is actually my friend or not because in the industry you wanna hold onto friendships because you think that’s what you’re supposed to do, but then you realize these people don’t actually benefit you in any way.”
Justine went on to highlight how certain friendships were “emotionally draining” at a point in time. She is now more “particular and present in friendships” than she has been in the past. The “In My Bag” singer continued to explain how freeing it feels to “be yourself around people who can be themselves” around her.
“Let’s just be honest, man, the world, not even in this industry people can be fake, and it’s hard to tell when someone is being real with you, and for me, it’s not worth having a fake friendship. That does nothing for you, so I’d rather just be real, be myself, and if you don’t love me for who I am, then I’m just not meant for you, and you’re not meant for me.”
The R&B singer made some valid points, showing a different side we all can connect with. Many fans in the audience were also able to relate.
